Track of the Week: Nevermen – Mr Mistake

As a Faith No More-fan I’ve always kept an eye out for all the sideprojects, especially of vocalist Mike Patton. I guess I can call myself a ‘Mike Patton-fan’ as well, since I also have records of Fantômas, Tomahawk and Peeping Tom in my collection as well as his collaborations with Jon Kaada, The Dillinger Escape Plan and The X-Ecutioners. So when his long awaited collab with Doseone and TV On The Radio’s Tunde Adebimpe finally got a name, I was stoked as fuck.

The first listen was a bit of a downer, but the Nevermen record grew on me. It has something very addictive on it. A weird raw catchiness, structured chaos and some perfect harmonies. ‘Mr Mistake’ is one of the best songs on the record and though the remix Boards Of Canada did is also something special, but it’s the original version wich is this weeks track of the week.

I know, it’s not something you would’ve expected as a SFG Track of the Week, wich makes it even more fun. But it’s those beats, those basstones. It’s Adebimpe’s soulful voice, Doseone’s raps, Patton’s noise. It’s those vocal harmonies. It’s those layers of electronica. It’s the “Make no mistake” mantra. And sure, it’s Sarina Nihei’s handdrawn video as well. Enjoy.
