The last instalment of our little #EOTY series, pt 10, is written by the other half of us: Jeffrey.
First and foremost I would like to thank Maartje for letting me get back on board. Most of you will know that in September 2011 Maartje, Marcel (now of The Shape of Punk to Come, amongst others) and I started Smithsfoodgroup. A few years later Marcel and I called it quits, but after I finally graduated in February this year (yay me!) I asked Maartje if I could be part of it again. And I know Maartje is doing so much more than I am doing, but seriously: thanks. Also, thank’s to everyone we’ve worked with this year. From venue staff, bands, labels: everyone. Special shout-outs go to Holy Roar Records, Incubate Festival, ACU and Capsloc.
Release-wise it was kinda an odd year. Some bands didn’t deliver and some records were not good enough. But I managed to compose something like a top 15: Deafheaven, Svalbard, Baroness, Maserati, Rolo Tomassi, Make Up And Vanity Set, Dazzled Sticks, Ghostpoet, We Never Learned To Live, Between the Buried and Me, Employed To Serve, Human Future, Julia Holter, SOAK and We Lost The Sea. Seriously: Deafheaven delivered something so good, New Bermuda is insane.
In terms of our own releases, I’m really happy with how the Yards / Rites / We Are Dust / Astrid Lindgren split tape turned out to be and I’m personally very stoked that we’ve released Dead Neanderthals’ Prime juggernaut on tape. For me that’s something extra, because those guys are one of my favourite Dutch artists. They played some amazing liveshows, with a livingroomconcert (!) and a gig on the 20th floor of a former office building (!) as my favourites.
I really enjoyed the trip Maartje and me took to see Pariso’s last show, that was really a blast. I went to my first Noorderslag (John Coffey!) and my first Roskilde Festival (Mastodon! Kendrick Lamar!) and as always spend a few days in Tilburg at Incubate (Melvins! Three Trapped Tigers!). Apart from that, I finally saw System Of A Down and KISS for the first time and went to clubshows of A Place To Bury Strangers, Godspeed You! Black Emperor and The Dillinger Escape Plan, amongst others. For next year I only have tickets for Opgezwolle, but the rest will follow.
Apart from music, I really enjoyed Mad Max: Fury Road, American Ultra, Avengers: Age of Ultron and the CitizenFour documentary, but also the first season of Daredevil, Jessica Jones and The Man in the High Castle. Looking forward to Quentin Tarantino’s The Hateful Eight, JJ Abram’s new Star Wars flick, Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice and the continuation of the Marvel Cinematic Universe. I’m looking forward to the new records of Ulver, DIIV and Mike Patton’s project with Doseone and TV on the Radio’s Tunde Adebimpe; Nevermen. But as always it’s just wait and see.
P.s. I’m getting married next year and we’re also expecting our first kid!
