Meis and Tim of Monomentum Collective wrote up their first year as a label. I shot them a message pretty early on, when their first release (a split by Tim’s band Slakkengang and Svartvit) surfaced. We’ve got that one in our distro now and continued to put on a show with these guys (Jonah Matranga in September), and releases for The Fifth Alliance and GEWOON FUCKING RAGGEN (upcoming!). Cheers, team. Lots of love.
According to Incubate, we are the „new kind on the block”. Which is kind of true: we started Monomentum Collective in March 2015 (9 months ago during the appearance of this article) and since then, our label/platform/artists-collective is growing pretty fast. We started Monomentum Collective, because we share a passion for the obscure underground scene – but we don’t like to be tied to specific genres. We focus on sentiment. Dark and obscure is what feeds the Monumentum Collective roster and that includes black metal, noise and doom as well as folk or minimal electro. Monomentum Collective is just the two of us, stationed in Tilburg and Eindhoven. Our ambition is to create a platform for musicians, visual artists, photographers and audio- and video artists. This already resulted in a couple of cool collaborations. We are getting to know a lot of new artists, labels and organizations, which is really fun. But the nicest thing about all this is to help underground bands with getting gigs and to physically release their music, preferably on vinyl.
If we look back at this year, the first highlight we’d like to notice is our very fist release: the Slakkengang and Svartvit split 7”. This is when all the craziness started. Not too long after that, GEWOON FUCKING RAGGEN approached us to help them co-releasing their album Bruja. This was our first collaboration with Smithsfoodgroup DIY, with whom we love to work. Together with other labels, Smithsfoodgroup DIY and us also collaborated to get Death Poems of The Fifth Alliance on 12”. We can honestly say that collaborating with labels as Smithsfoodgroup and WOOAAARGH, is also one of our personal highlights this year.
Besides the Slakkengang/Svartvit, GEWOON FUCKING RAGGEN and The Fifth Alliance vinyl, we’ve worked with TSAR BOMPA and Join Us In Creating Excellence to get their music on CD. For next year, we have plans to release new music from TSAR BOMPA on vinyl. If you haven’t heard their stoner-disko’ yet, go check it! After these releases we’ve met a lot of new people and bands, and are planning on a lot more exciting releases.
Our last, but not least, highlight was on November 14th, when we showcased our work during our own festival ‚Grijs Gebied‘ (Grey Area) in the Hall of Fame, Tilburg. Besides bands from our label on two stages, it also featured a photo exhibition by three photographers. Eco-food was served by Stadsnomaden from Nijmegen. With approximately 150 visitors at this first edition, we can call this quite a success.
This year was a busy one, with mostly new experiences. We look forward to meeting new friends, labels, bands and share the energy we get from doing this with all of you.
